Schopnost riskovat by měla patřit k základní výbavě úspěšných politiků. Je rovněž tím, co odděluje známé státníky od davů šedých figur, jejichž jména si historie nezapamatuje. Zřejmě tak uvažovala současná japonská premiérka Sanae Takaiči, když se rozhodla vyhlásit předčasné volby do dolní sněmovny tamního parlamentu (Diet). Navzdory relativně vysoké popularitě jejího kabinetu se přitom jedná o riskantní krok, který v případě úspěchu může její kariéře dodat dosud netušenou dynamiku a učinit z ní jednoho z nejvlivnějších politiků poválečné éry.

The ability to take risks should be part of the basic toolkit of successful politicians. It is also what separates well-known statesmen from the masses of grey figures whose names history does not remember. This was likely the reasoning of Japan’s current Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi, when she decided to call early elections to the lower house of the national parliament (the Diet). Despite the relatively high popularity of her cabinet, this is a risky move that—if successful—could inject unprecedented momentum into her career and make her one of the most influential politicians of the postwar era.
